Data Science Degrees Offered at the University of Utah

The University of Utah offers a Graduate Certificate in Big Data, Graduate Certificate in Business Analytics, Master of Science in Computing Data Management and Analysis Track, Master of Science in Business Analytics, and Doctor of Philosophy in Data Management and Analysis.

The Graduate Certificate in Big Data provides students with the training to store, maintain, process, and evaluate data in various sectors. A minimum of 15 credit hours is needed for completion of the program. The courses include Data Mining, Advanced Algorithms, Machine Learning, Database Systems, and Visualization for Data Science.

The Graduate Certificate in Business Analytics enables students to acquire specialized knowledge in data analytics and management. The program requires the completion of 18 credit hours. The courses include Introduction to Business Analytics, Statistics and Predictive Analytics, Database Theory and Design, Introduction to Data Mining, Advanced Data Mining, Visual Basic Applications for Business, Data Visualization, Data Science and Big Data Analytics, and Digital Marketing and Analytics.

The Master of Science in Computing Data Management and Analysis Track provides students with an advanced understanding of the management and evaluation of data. Students have the ability to select a course-only, thesis, or project option. At least 30 credit hours are needed to complete the degree. A maximum of nine thesis hours or six project hours are allowed. The core data courses include Data Mining, Machine Learning, Database Systems, Advanced Algorithms, Probabilistic Learning, Statistical Inference, Linear Models, and Visualization. Students can also choose a more specialized data science option within the program.

The Master of Science in Business Analytics features a unique combination of business principles and data analytics concepts. The program prepares students to take the Associate Certified Analytics Professional certification. A minimum of 30 credits is needed to complete the program. The courses include Introduction to Business Analytics, Statistics and Predictive Analysis, Database Theory and Design, Introduction to Data Mining, Data Science and Big Data Analytics, Data Visualization, Algorithms for Business, Digital Marketing and Analytics, Machine Learning for Business Applications, and Analytical Decision Models.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Data Management and Analysis provides students with an in-depth understanding of data management and involves scholarly research. A minimum of 50 semester hours is needed for completion, including at least 14 semester hours of dissertation research. The core courses include Data Mining, Machine Learning, Advance Algorithms, Database Systems, Visualization for Data Science.

Federal Work-Study

The Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a federally funded program available for eligible students to work on a part-time basis to earn money to help pay for their higher education.
