The Master of Science in Data Science offered at Texas Tech University teaches students how to interpret data. About Texas Tech University

Originally known as the Texas Technological College, opened in 1923. Almost as soon as settlers began arriving in Texas, there was a call for an institute of higher learning. Twice, the state legislature passed bills to establish such as school, but one was repealed when a discrepancy was discovered regarding the location selection and the other vetoed due to financial constraints. The veto angered so many residents, there was talk of West Texas seceding from the state.

Discussion continued with some suggesting opening a branch of another college in the area. In 1923, however, it was decided a separate school would open in West Texas. People lined the streets of Lubbock when the selection committee arrived in town and this community support led to Lubbock being selected over Floydada, Plainview, and Sweetwater.

Starting in 1925, students were required to engage in military training but the formal Reserve Officers Training Corps did not begin until 1936. During World War II, enrollment declined but once the war ended, student enrollment grew significantly as soldiers returned to take advantage of the GI Bill. Military training was conducted at the college as early as 1925 but the formal Reserve Officers’

Because programs at the school had grown beyond just technical subjects, it was suggested in the 1960s that the name of the school change to Texas State University. Because alumni wanted to keep the “Double T” logo, the school petitioned the legislature to change the name to Texas Tech University. At the time, then-Governor John Connally pushed to have the school join the Texas A&M University System. This led to a heated debate about changing the name. However, in 1969, the new name was approved.

Today, there are more than 36,500 students attending Texas Tech, which offers 150 undergraduate, 100 master’s and 50 doctoral degree programs. Texas Tech is ranked in the top 100 public research institutions. The school has an 87 percent one-year retention rate and the school was named a Diversity Champion by INSIGHT Into Diversity for the past four years. Niche has named the school in the top 100 public universities as has US News & World Report. CollegeFactual.com named Texas Tech as the number one Best College for the Money in the Southwest.

Texas Tech University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges. Accreditation indicates that the school meets or exceeds criteria set forth by the agency that indicates to students, parents and prospective employers that graduates are well-prepared for careers in their chosen field of study. Texas Tech University Application Requirements

Applicants for the Master of Science in Data Science must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university. They must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. They must also provide a current resume as well as official GRE or GMAT scores.

Texas Tech University Tuition and Financial Aid

Full-time undergraduate tuition for students living in Texas, Oklahoma or New Mexico is $11,320 per year and $23,770 for non-residents. Graduate tuition is $8,954 for residents of Texas, Oklahoma or New Mexico and $17,254 for non-residents.

In order to qualify for financial aid, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA must be renewed annually. Some assistance is need-based while others are merit-based so students should complete the FAFSA regardless of income. In order to qualify for school scholarships, students must complete the Texas Tech Scholarship application found at www.scholarships.ttu.edu.
