The Bay Area’s Big Data Degrees at USF

The University of San Francisco appears in our ranking of the 20 Best Data Science Bachelor’s Degree Programs.

In Harney Center, the College of Arts & Sciences awards the BS in Data Science for University of San Francisco undergrads to fulfill the 190,000 shortage of innovative statisticians extracting information from complex sources. Directed by Dr. Nathaniel Stevens, a Chakma Award for Exceptional Teaching Award recipient, the 56-unit major integrates courses from Linear Regression to Database Programming at a 13:1 student-faculty ratio. Since 2014, the MS in Data Science has admitted cohorts averaging 85 each July for a 35-unit, one-year curriculum emphasizing modern modeling methods. Chaired by Dr. David Uminsky, a Kavli Frontiers of Science Fellow, the master’s includes 15 practicum hours weekly at PayPal, Airbnb, Mozilla, Vida Health, Charles Schwab, and others. Downtown, the School of Management began the MBA Concentration in Business Analytics to teach managerial strategies for data utilization. This 22-month, AACSB-accredited option led by Dr. Frank Fletcher has full-time Monday to Thursday courses like Marketing Analytics leading to the consulting capstone. Other programs include the Data Acquisition & Machine Learning Certificate, Data Science for Product Managers Certificate, and SQL Data Analysis Certificate.

About the University of San Francisco

The University of San Francisco originated on October 15, 1855, when Italian immigrant Father Anthony Maraschi opened St. Ignatius Academy on Market Street for Jesuits. Chartered by the California State Legislature in 1859, its first location was destroyed by the 1906 earthquake. Eight years later, building began on its current 55-acre, 25-building campus overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge. On its Diamond Jubilee in 1930, the University of San Francisco name was formally adopted. By 1964, the four-year Catholic AJCU member welcomed women into coed academics. During the 1970s, the Society of Jesus and Religious of the Sacred Heart worked to merge Lone Mountain College. In 2018, the Princeton Review positioned San Fran #7 for high college city marks. College Factual deemed USF the 18th best business school and 12th top data processing program. WalletHub proclaimed the University of San Francisco 92nd for career outcomes and 186th for best campus experience. The Economist put USF 217th globally among 1,275 institutions for value-added education. PayScale calculated the 166th highest 20-year ROI of $460,000 for San Fran alumni. The Social Mobility Index also positioned USF 193rd for uplifting students.

University of San Francisco Accreditation Details

On February 19, 2010, the University of San Francisco satisfactorily finished a lengthy, in-depth evaluation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Senior College and University Commission to renew the decennial Level VI accreditation under its 28th president, Dr. Paul John Fitzgerald, who also claimed the 2010 CQIA Innovation Prize. Based 18 miles southeast via Interstate 880 in Alameda, this nine-territory Pacific accreditor is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) to review the standards of USF’s 44 baccalaureate, 65 master’s, and 12 doctoral majors. Particularly, the MBA Concentration in Business Analytics was reaffirmed by the elite Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) in February 2015.

University of San Francisco Application Requirements

Enrolling at the University of San Francisco is labeled “moderately difficult” on Peterson’s since 10,707 of the 16,313 Fall 2017 candidates were okayed for just 65 percent acceptance. First-year Dons seeking the BS in Data Science must be culminating 20-unit college-prep secondary curriculum. STEM majors have prerequisites in Algebra, Trigonometry, Physics, and Chemistry plus four years of English. The Class of 2021 boasted average 3.56 GPA, 1228 SAT, and 27 ACT marks. Joining the nearly 500 undergrad transfers requires at least 24 semester or 36 quarter hours of college coursework with GPAs above 3.0. Foreign learners from 91 countries have passed the English O-Level exam or reached an 80 TOEFL iBT score. The MS in Data Science only considers accredited bachelor’s grads with Java and C++ knowledge. Previous credits in Linear Algebra, Inferential Statistics, and Programming are mandated. Students have a median 3.47 GPA, 167 quantitative GRE, and 50 quantitative GMAT score. The MBA in Business Analytics Concentration also necessitates at least two years of experience.

The University of San Francisco established freshman deadlines of November 1st for Early Action and January 15th for Regular Action. Interested BS in Data Science transfers apply until March 1st for Fall and November 15th for Spring. August cohorts for the MS in Data Science must meet the December 5th priority or March 1st final deadline. The School of Management has unique MBA application rounds ending November 15th, January 15th, March 15th, and May 15th. Accordingly, submit the Common Application or USF Application online for $70. Test scores are sent electronically with codes, such as 91M-3X-08 for the GMAT. Tuition and Financial Aid

For 2018-19, the University of San Francisco is billing full-time BS in Data Science majors $23,775 each semester or $47,550 annually. Summer Session courses incur $1,135 per unit. The $226 ASUSF fee and $290 transportation fee are required. Aetna health insurance costs $2,650 unless waived. Living at the “Fog City” campus dorms’ like Hayes-Healy Hall adds $10,010 for yearly housing. Unlimited dining plans for Bon Appétit are $4,820 every nine months. Annual bachelor’s attendance equals $62,896 on-site and $51,150 at home. The MS in Data Science is charging $1,385 per unit or $40,165 total. MBA in Business Analytics students are paying $1,475 per unit. Graduate students still afford a $60 AGSUSF fee, $200 management fee, and $2,650 insurance plan.

According to the NCES College Navigator, the Financial Services Office in Lone Mountain Hall helps 68 percent of full-time USF Dons get the average aid of $24,371 each for $112.2 million combined. University funds include the Robert Holstein Memorial Scholarship, Betty L. Blakley Scholarship, Alexander Urban Scholarship, Community Service Merit Scholarship, Dean’s Scholarship, LGBTQ Merit Award, Bernard Martin Scholarship, Cassou-Shan Scholarship, Hothem Esposito Scholarship, and Richard Puntillo First Generation Scholarship. Money magazine ranked the University of San Francisco 223rd for an average debt of $25,000 from Federal Direct and Plus loans. Golden State natives also apply for the Cal Grant, Middle Class Scholarship, California Dream Act, and Law Enforcement Personnel Dependents Grant.
