Getting Ready for Big Data Jobs at UE

The University of Evansville appears in our ranking of the Top 20 Most Affordable Bachelor’s in Data Science.

Since Fall 2016, the Mathematics Department has granted the Bachelor of Science in Statistics and Data Science for University of Evansville undergrads seeking the rigorous, project-driven training to extract insights from complex equations. Directed by Dr. Dave Dwyer, a 2013 Berger Faculty Service Award recipient, the 89-credit STEM major integrates applied experience with cutting-edge statistical software in the Koch Center. The “Changemaker Campus” keeps an 11:1 learner-professor ratio for deeply engaged courses like Calculus, Experimental Design, Linear Models, Computer Programming, and Data Mining. One specialization is available for Actuarial Science with a 100 percent SOA certification rate. Majors might also take the Math in Moscow trip, publish in The Pentagon, present at the Rose-Hulman Conference, enter the William Lowell Putnam Competition, pledge Kappa Mu Epsilon, and intern at Anthem.

About the University of Evansville

The University of Evansville was opened on September 9, 1856, at Moores Hill for coed, college-prep education in southeastern Indiana. Fifty-three years later, the Institute opened its second building named for steel industry donor Andrew Carnegie. In 1917, George S. Clifford signed its covenant with the Indiana Conference of the Methodist Church. Months later, it became Evansville College and began erecting the 31-building “Stoplight City” campus near the Kentucky border. Raising $80 million in 2010, Evansville obtained university status for private, close-knit liberal arts education and 120+ clubs. Forbes placed the University of Evansville 311th overall with the 214th top private education. Times Higher Education crowned UE the 301st best institution nationwide. WalletHub noticed Evansville for the 144th best campus experience and 173rd best educational outcomes. The Social Mobility Index recognized UE for the 182nd top opportunities. In Washington Monthly, UE holds the country’s 33rd highest PhD completion rate and 148th best financial aid. PayScale positioned the University of Evansville 376th based on mid-career salary data of $61,100. College Values Online also deemed UE the 45th top school for international students.

University of Evansville Accreditation Details

In June 2016, the University of Evansville passed its comprehensive evaluation by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association (HLC-NCA) to continue Level V accreditation for another decade without sanctions under its 24th president, Dr. Christopher Pietruszkiewicz. Headquartered 289 miles directly north in Chicago, this big 19-state Great Lakes Region accreditor is authorized by the U.S. Secretary of Education to certify the quality of UE’s one associate, 81 baccalaureate, six master’s, and one doctoral programs. Evansville is approved by the University Senate of the United Methodist Church and Indiana Commission for Higher Education too.

University of Evansville Application Requirements

Entering the University of Evansville is considered “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s because only 69 percent of the 4,033 Fall 2016 applications were accepted. First-year Purple Aces shooting for the B.S. in Statistics and Data Science need to finish a secondary diploma. Home-schooled entrants must show college readiness after four years of English and Math. Passing the GED equivalent with minimum subject test scores of 145 is adequate too. In grades 9-12, admitted undergrads achieve a mean GPA of 3.66. Evansville is wholly test-optional, but average SAT and ACT scores are 1200 and 26 respectively. The William L. Ridgway College of Arts & Sciences stipulates a 560 SAT Math, 43 Duolingo, or 70 TOEFL Internet score for foreign freshmen though. Transferring into the Mathematics Department will require 75 or less college credits from accredited institutions with at least a high C average.

The University of Evansville has a December 1st Early Action deadline, but freshmen can apply on a space-available basis thereafter. Transfers abide STAR deadlines of August 16th for Fall and January 11th for Spring admission. Easy articulation agreements exist with Ivy Tech Community College and Vincennes University. Tuition and Financial Aid

For 2018-19, the University of Evansville will charge full-time B.S. in Statistics and Data Science majors $35,300 for yearly tuition. Studying part-time incurs $990 per credit. Six-week summer courses are discounted to $540 per credit. Undergrads budget for the $326 activity fee, $790 services fee, and $196 technology fee annually. Living at the Vanderburgh County campus’ dorms like Brentano Hall adds $6,540 for housing and $6,240 for anytime dining. Textbooks cost roughly $1,200 while personal expenses total up to $3,424 yearly. Annual bachelor’s attendance equals $52,190 on-site and $40,018 with family.

According to the NCES College Navigator, 85 percent of full-time UE Purple Aces receive free green with average assistance offers of $23,903 for $47.8 million total. University funds include the Dean’s Scholarship, William L. Ridgway Award, Scouting Scholarship, Athletic Scholarship, National Merit Scholarship, International Baccalaureate Diploma Scholarship, and Sibling Scholarship. Money magazine ranked Evansville 198th nationally for value with a median debt of $22,874 from the government’s Direct Subsidized, Direct Unsubsidized, Perkins, and Parents Plus loans.
