Claremont Graduate University recognizes that data science permeates all other fields, and as such, the school offers sixteen related master’s degrees in nine disciplines. Many of these programs are variations of the Master of Science in Information Systems and Technology. The six available concentrations include Cybersecurity and Networking, Geographic Information Systems, Information Systems and Technology, IT Strategy and Innovation, Data Science and Analytics, and Health Informatics. Each of these programs consists of 36 hours and take between one and three years to complete. Courses include Cryptography and Computer Security, Introduction to GIS Solution Development, Databases and Big Data, Data Mining Practicum, and Health Geoinformatics. There are a variety of facilities on the CGU campus that give students the opportunity to practice and do research in the field like the IDEA Lab, GIS Club, and Intelligent Systems Lab.

Featured Programs

There are two data science degrees in the mathematics field that each require 32 credit hours, four core classes and four electives. The M.S. in Computational and Applied Mathematics features coursework in applied mathematics, numerical methods, machine learning, and modeling theory. The other option, the M.S. in Statistical Sciences, covers advanced mathematical theories and offers electives like Data Mining, Simulation, Mathematical Finance, Algorithms, Optimization, and Computational Methods for Molecular Biology. The business data science programs are also math-heavy and include the M.S. in Financial Engineering Data Analysis and the M.S. in Marketing Analytics. The financial engineering program consists of 40 credit hours including a 10-course core with a combination of both business and math courses like Time Series Analysis, Financial Derivatives, and Quantitative Risk Management. The marketing degree is 32 credit hours and can be completed in 1 year. All students finish the program with a four-hour capstone project.

The other four degrees have a liberal arts focus and are part of the School of Social Science, Policy and Evaluation. The M.A. in Education and the M.S. in Evaluation and Applied Research train students to work in schools from the elementary to college level and also to do research and design public policy in the field. The M.A. in Public Policy and Evaluation and the M.S. in Applied Data Science and International Studies combine data science with the study of domestic and international policy, politics, history, and economics.

Claremont Graduate University offers three programs entirely online: Marketing Analytics, Evaluation and Applied Research, and Information Systems. In addition, students can continue their studies to complete either a Ph.D. in Computational Science or a Ph.D. in Psychology with a focus on Evaluation and Applied Research Methods.

About Claremont Graduate University

Opening in 1925 in Claremont, California, CGU is the oldest graduate-only school operating in the United States today. The school is one of seven Claremont Colleges and is located directly next to the Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences, another member of the group. This college system was based on the Oxford model in which, instead of having one large university, there were several independent schools, each employing a specific learning style. The WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) first recognized Claremont Graduate University with regional accreditation in 1949, and the school was last reviewed in 2014. The WSCUC’s accreditation process provides three main functions, ensuring compliance with existing standards, emphasizing the importance of continual self-improvement, and holding the school accountable in all areas. Claremont Graduate University Application Requirements

University admissions requirements to Claremont Graduate University include a completed application and $80 fee, official transcripts documenting completion of an undergraduate degree, and a professional resume. Specific programs have other requirements which can include GRE or GMAT scores, a three-page personal statement, and at least two letters of recommendation. Additionally, graduating with a specific undergraduate major, prerequisite coursework, a professional license, or work experience are necessary for different disciplines, and all of this information can be found on the program website or by contacting the department directly. The deadline for priority admissions and consideration for scholarships is February 1st with a final deadline of April 1st for all applicants.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The tuition structure at Claremont Graduate University is very straightforward with tuition for all programs set at $1980 per credit hour in addition to a $245 student fee and $125 technology fee each semester. Students who have finished their coursework for their degree and are working on research for a thesis or dissertation pay a fee for continued registration in the program. The rate for master’s students is $1310 per semester with doctoral candidates paying $2275.

All students are advised to complete a FAFSA to determine eligibility for different financial aid programs. There are over 100 institutional fellowships available for students demonstrating academic excellence. These are made possible through donations to the school, and each donor sets the requirements for their specific fellowship. This program provides tuition waivers to master’s-level students who meet these qualifications. For doctoral students, there are dissertation awards that provide $10,000 per year.

Another option for students who maintain full-time work during their studies is tuition assistance programs in which an employer covers part or all of tuition costs.
