Before graduating, students will be required to participate in a capstone course in which they will use all the tools and methods they have learned to create an important data science project.
The university also offers an accelerated Bachelor of Science/Master of Professional Science (M.P.S.) in Data Science for individuals that desire to earn a degree in data science quicker than the average student. Individuals can apply to this program in their junior or senior undergraduate year. If admitted into the accelerated program, the student will be able to take up to nine graduate credits that will be applied to their undergraduate and graduate degree. By joining the accelerated program, a student may shorten the time of their degrees and receive graduate courses at the undergraduate tuition rate.
Additionally, the University of Maryland Baltimore County also features a graduate certificate in data science for individuals who are interested in learning about data science but are already earning a graduate degree in a different subject at the university. This 4-course certificate program is centered around providing hands-on, in-depth experience with data science using real-life data and techniques. Students interested in pursuing the accelerated B.S./M.P.S. in Data Science program must submit all application materials by August 1st of their junior or senior undergraduate year. To apply for this program, students must possess a 3.0 GPA and have completed a course in statistics, linear algebra, and programming. The application process includes filling out an accelerated bachelor’s/master’s application form, turning in undergraduate transcripts, submitting documents to an advisor for review and approval, and completing the approval form for undergraduates to take graduate courses. Once the student is in the semester prior to completing their bachelor’s degree, they must submit an application for the M.P.S. in Data Science program.

Tuition and Financial Aid
In-state students in the data science master’s or certificate program can expect to pay $659 per credit, and out-of-state students in the program can expect to pay $1,132 per credit.
Undergraduate students that are Maryland residents are required to pay an annual tuition rate of $12,023, not including any fees or expenses. Out-of-state, undergraduate students are required to pay $27,662, which also does not include any fees or expenses.
Students pursuing an M.P.S. in Data Science or a graduate certificate are eligible to apply for an assistantship through the University of Maryland Baltimore County. An assistantship requires the student to work a certain number of hours each week by providing assistance to a faculty or staff member. Some of the assistantship positions that are available are administrative assistant, fellow, grader, peaceworker assistant, research assistant, residential assistant, teaching assistant, and trainee. Stipends to live on as well as tuition waivers are provided to students participating in assistantships.
