The doctoral data science program at Aspen University is designed for students with foundational knowledge in the industry but who wish to move into research or further their technical skills. It focuses on understanding theoretical concepts as well as practical applications with a focus on research and analysis. Students must also complete and defend a dissertation. Upon graduation, graduates are prepared for high-level careers in computer science.
Because the program is offered online students must have a computer, internet connection and a Microsoft package that includes Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
Students must complete a proctored examination as part of the program. The examination does not impact the student’s GPA, but students who receive an “Unsuccessful” grade can only take the test one more time and, if they do not pass, may be removed from the program. The examination is arranged near the student’s residence or place of work. All proctored examinations are open-book, but no other resources, such as the internet or notes, are permitted. Students are encouraged to type their examination using word processing equipment, but handwritten examinations are also accepted as long as they are legible and in dark ink. Students must earn an 80 percent or higher to receive a passing grade.

Aspen University Accreditation Details
Aspen University is accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission which is recognized by the Council for Higher Education. This indicates that students are receiving the highest quality education based on standards set forth by the accrediting agency. Various programs throughout the university are accredited by industry-specific organizations as well.
Aspen University has been approved by Colorado to participate in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements which provides oversight for higher education distance programs such as those offered at Aspen.
Aspen University Admission Requirements
Admission requirements for the Computer Science doctoral program at Aspen University are a completed application as well as a current resume. Students must provide a statement of goals that reflect goals at the professional, academic and personal level. The statement should be between 300 and 500 words. Students must have experience or education in Object Oriented Programming (OOP) development. They must provide either an official transcript that shows completion of an OOP course in the past seven years or professional experience using an OOP language. Students must have a Master’s degree or higher with an overall GPA of 3.0 and must provide transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Students must also provide copies of recent military orders or their DD214. Students who have earned college credit at other universities must submit to a transfer credit evaluation. No more than nine credits can be transferred into the program.
Although Aspen University recognizes life and work experiences for college credit, Portfolio Credit, or Prior Experiential Learning may not be used toward a doctorate at Aspen.
Aspen University Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition for the doctoral program is $1,350 per course and students must complete 20 courses. This means the total cost of the Computer Science program is $27,000 plus fees.
Financial aid is available, and students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students may be eligible for Federal Pell grants and eligibility is based on need, cost of education and how much funding the program receives from Congress. Students may also qualify for William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Programs which allow students to borrow directly from the federal government. Direct subsidized and unsubsidized loans are also available. Parents may also qualify for Direct Plus Loans.
Students must meet satisfactory academic progress requirements in order to remain eligible for federal aid. They must remain in good academic standing and must be enrolled as at least a half-time student.
Aspen University also accepts employer reimbursements and assistance. Aspen partners with over 50 organizations to offer discounts to their employees as well. The university also accepts military benefits and offers a $300 per course discount for doctoral studies to members of the military, veterans and their spouses.
Aspen University offers a monthly payment plan that allows students to build the cost of education into their budget without borrowing money. The monthly payment for doctoral degrees is $375 per month. The first payment is due on the first day of the first class and additional payments are withdrawn each month thereafter.
