About The University of Alabama in Huntsville

The University of Alabama in Huntsville opened in what later became Stone Middle School in 1950. The school came about when Huntsville leaders determined that an extension of the University of Alabama was necessary in the area. Initially, the school only offered freshman-level classes and many of the first students were veterans of World War II who were taking advantage of the GI Bill, which covered the $4 per credit hour tuition.

Within a few years, enrollment had grown to the point that the City procured 83 acres on the south side of Highway 72 and approved the construction of a new building for the college. By the time the building was completed, however, it was already too small to house classes needed for the growing aerospace and defense industries. These industries needed individuals with the specialized training that was being offered at the school.

A bill passed by the Alabama legislature allowed Huntsville and Madison Counties to purchase 200 additional acres of land to build a research institute, effectively promoting the campus from an extension to a branch of the University of Alabama. The campus officially became a branch campus in 1969.
