The University of South Florida is comprised of 180 programs and majors at the undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and specialist levels. The university is divided into 14 colleges. Technology is rapidly advancing and the programs at the University of South Florida ensure that all students who enroll and participate in data science-related programs are prepared with the skills and knowledge necessary to obtain a career in information security. Students are taught the basics of core technologies as well as the impact that such things have on the world and people’s lives. Concentrations in information security, health informatics, and data science and analytics are available to further integrate critical competence and theoretical discipline throughout the information science program. Undergraduate students can further develop and hone their choice of study by advancing into a graduate or doctoral program. Many of these programs are available to be taken virtually.

About the University of South Florida

The University of South Florida was founded in 1956 as a major research University. By 1958 the contracts for the university’s first three buildings were established and awarded. In 1960 the University of South Florida opened its doors. USF conferred its first 300 degrees in December of 1963 and a year later in 1964, the Board of Regents approved the plans to establish USF’s master’s degree programs in the Colleges of Education, Business Administration, Liberal Arts, and Basic Studies. The University of South Florida opened its medical school in 1971; that same year, USF awarded its first doctoral degree in biology and marine science. The College of Basic Studies became the College of Liberal Arts and was divided into four schools which were the Colleges of Arts and Letters, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Natural Sciences and Fine Arts.

The University of South Florida continued adding programs throughout the years and in 1973 opened the School of Nursing. USF is comprised of other campus locations and in 1974 the Sarasota Institution became part of the USF University system. Those who wished to further advance their education were able to do so by 1981 when USF opened its graduate school. The advanced level degrees served well as USF was the first university in the United States to offer an anthropology program at the doctoral level. The USF St. Petersburg campus expanded its program and began admitting more undergraduate students. By 2006 USF St. Petersburg established its very first residence hall.

USF’s first newspaper titled The Oracle was established in 1966 although it started in 1960. By 1967 USF saw its first Greek organization on campus. In 1968 USF officially became a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The University of South Florida is ranked 25th for best research universities and 42nd among all research universities in the nation. USF currently has 15,000 faculty and staff members, a total of 32,027 undergraduate students, and 10,810 graduate students. USF boasts average class sizes of 33 students. Of the student body, 128 countries are represented. USF’s Center for Entrepreneurship is ranked in the top 15th percentile nationally.

The University of South Florida Application Requirements

First-year undergraduate students should complete an online application, submit a $30 non-refundable application fee or a fee waiver, official high school transcripts, and SAT or ACT scores of 1310 – 1150 or 24-28. First-year students can also submit satisfactory GED transcripts.

First-year graduate students should have an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution, a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and satisfactory GRE scores. Graduate students should also submit letters of recommendation, a resume, and a statement of purpose for programs that require those documents. Prospective graduates should submit a $30 non-refundable application fee and official transcripts.

Tuition and Financial Aid

  • Undergraduate students who are residents of the state of Florida and are living on campus can expect tuition of $23,446.
  • Undergraduates who are non-residents of the state and are living on campus can expect tuition of $34,360.
  • Undergraduate students who are residents of the state that live off-campus can expect tuition of $21,530.
  • Undergraduates who are non-residents living off-campus can expect tuition of $32,444.
  • Graduate students living on campus who are residents of the state can expect tuition of $25,698 and non-resident graduate students residing on campus can expect tuition of $33,722.
  • Graduate residents living off-campus can expect tuition of $24,998 and non-residents living off-campus can expect tuition of $33,022.

These tuition costs include the price of housing and meals, books and supplies, and other miscellaneous expenses and fees. Undergraduate students have the potential to receive a scholarship from the University of South Florida with an average financial award of $10,774.
