About Webster University
Webster University began as Loretto College in 1915 during a time when poor children were often unable to obtain an education. In an effort to rectify that, The Sisters of Loretto, a Catholic religious organization which began in 1812, dedicated themselves to providing an education to those who may not otherwise be provided one. The school was one of the first Catholic women’s colleges west of the Mississippi River making it progressive as women were not offered higher education at that time. The school began with five students with two women graduating in 1919.
In 1924, in order to differentiate from the Loretto Academy, the school name changed to Webster College. Throughout the Great Depression, the school struggled financially but began to see growth in the 1940s and 1950s. In 1962, male students were admitted although classes for men were limited. It was not until 1968 that the school become fully coeducational, the year after the school transferred from the Sisters of Loretto to a board of directors.
