Data Science Programs at Marist College

Applicants to Marist College may seek out multiple degrees in data science and business analytics and can study at the undergraduate or graduate level. Programs include a Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Analytics, the option to minor in data science and analytics, and the Advanced Certificate in Business Analytics for graduate students. Students may also earn a Master of Science in Information Systems or enroll in a five-year program that awards a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Information Systems.
The Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Analytics was first introduced at Marist College in 2016 due to the significant growth of the industry. Students can concentrate in one of four areas when they major in data science. Those concentrations include the study of big data, data analysis communications, data manipulation and prediction, and data aggregation and analysis. Students usually enroll in 12 to 16 credits each semester in the college’s undergraduate programs.
Some of the classes a student may see while enrolled in a data science program at Marist College include Introduction to Programming, Data Visualization, Software Development, and Algorithm Analysis & Design. Students will also take Discrete Mathematics, Applied Statistics, and Machine Learning. Some of the interesting electives offered include Artificial Intelligence and Computational Linear Algebra.
For students who choose the information systems route, students will participate in mandatory field experience and will need to qualify for entry into the program’s graduate courses by maintaining a GPA of 3.2 or higher in undergraduate work. Classes required in the degree programs in information systems include Enterprise Architectures, Decision Support Systems, Software Development, and Introduction to Statistics.
Programs in data science and information systems at Marist College are available on campus, and there are also opportunities to attend classes online. The Advanced Certificate in Business Analytics is available entirely online. To earn the certificate, students who have already earned a bachelor’s degree will enroll in four classes that include Data Management I, Introduction to Data Analysis & Computational Statistics, Decision Support Systems, and Data Mining & Predictive Analytics.
About Marist College
Marist College is located in Poughkeepsie, New York, and has been in operation since 1905. The college is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. Its original purpose was to educate members of the Marist Brothers religious order, but the school eventually transformed into a liberal arts institution when it was accredited by the State of New York in 1929. Today, students can earn any of 56 undergraduate and graduate degrees or enroll in more than 20 certificate programs.
The college has around 5,000 students, and its campuses cover 440 acres in Poughkeepsie and a handful of other locations. The college also has a campus in New York City called the Manhattan Executive Center, which encompasses 18,000 square feet, as well as a campus in Florence, Italy. The school’s official colors are white and red, and students are nicknamed the Red Foxes. The college’s mascot is named Red Fox, and the sports programs are played in NCAA Division I athletic games in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Marist College Accreditation Details
Institutional accreditation for Marist College comes from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The most recent accreditation cycle started in 2013. Institutions of higher learning undergo the reaccreditation process once every decade. With its institutional accreditation, the school can award college degrees. Some of the schools and programs run by the college are also accredited by various organizations.
The Council on Social Work Education has accredited the bachelor’s degree program in social work. The Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences has accredited the medical technology program. The Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education has accredited the athletic training program. The School of Management and its programs have received accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.
Marist College Application Requirements
Admission criteria for Marist College include having a rank in the upper 50 percent of their graduating class and having an overall GPA of 3.1 to 3.7 on a 4.0 scale. The college takes into account the difficulty of the student’s high school curriculum and also has minimum requirements for the classes a student should take while still earning a high school diploma.
Those classes include four years of English, three years of science, and three years of math. The college doesn’t require students to submit standardized test scores, but applicants are allowed to submit scores if they are so inclined. Applicants usually have an SAT between 1210 and 1360 or an ACT from 26 to 31. The college places a significant amount of importance on the strength of the student’s high school transcript.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Students are billed at a rate consistent with the level of their program and will pay a total of $45,500 for tuition and fees, as well as $16,300 for room and board. The college estimates students will pay around $1,125 for books and supplies, $1,000 for transportation, and $1,100 for miscellaneous and personal costs. Overall, the cost of attendance for undergraduate students at Marist College is $65,025.
Graduate students are billed at a rate that corresponds with the class in which they are enrolled. Students in the Master of Arts in Integrated Marketing Communications will pay $850 per credit. The Master of Arts in Museum Studies at the Florence, Italy campus is $1,040 per credit. The Master of Science in Information Systems is $850 per credit. There are some additional fees associated with some programs. For example, the museum studies program may require that students buy a plane ticket to reach Italy.
Enrollees at Marist College may qualify for participation in the federal student loan program, as well as earn scholarships. Some students may be able to earn tuition reductions through connections with organizational and corporate partnerships.
