Four NJIT Degrees for Big Data Analytics Careers

New Jersey Institute of Technology appears in our ranking of the Top 20 Online Master’s in Database Administration.

At Guttenberg IT Center, the Ying Wu College of Computing offers a 120-credit, four-year B.S. in Bioinformatics for New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders to learn data analysis methods for medical research with 300-level major Newark courses from Calculus to Database Design. Chaired by Dr. Baruch Schieber, the M.S. in Data Science has the Garden State’s first standalone 30-credit, thesis-optional curriculum with Computational and Statistics tracks to analyze large datasets for $101,000 average mid-career pay. The M.S. in Applied Statistics follows a 30-credit, 18-month sequence of evening courses like Probability Distributions after 5 PM for 92 percent job placement with Merck, Enterprise, Microsoft, Booz Allen Hamilton, and more. Directed by Dr. Dantong Yu, the Ph.D. in Business Data Science provides a 54-credit, AACSB-accredited doctorate with seminars like Web Mining, a two-part qualifying exam, and original dissertation research. About the New Jersey Institute of Technology

The New Jersey Institute of Technology originated on March 24, 1880, when the Essex County congressman introduced a bill to establish the Newark Technical School. In February 1885, President Charles Colton welcomed the inaugural class of 88 to its West Park Street campus. In 1911, Newark Technical School built Weston Hall in honor of donor and Thomas Edison’s rival Edward Weston. In 1930, it became the Newark College of Engineering. In 1948, the College purchased the former Newark Orphan Asylum for $58,000 and made it Eberhardt Hall. In 1960, the first Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program was launched. On January 1, 1975, the New Jersey Institute of Technology name was adopted. In 1979, the earliest on-campus residents moved into Redwood Hall. By 2001, NJIT had debuted the College of Computing Sciences. In 2008, NJIT partnered with India’s Heritage Institute of Technology abroad.

Endowed for $113.6 million, the New Jersey Institute of Technology now has 845 faculty training 8,532 undergrad and 2,891 post-grad Highlanders from 23 countries on its 48-acre Newark campus or online with 200+ organizations like Data Science Club for 88 percent retention. In 2018, New Jersey Tech won the Augmented World Expo’s Auggie Innovation Award. In 2019, NJIT received an Association of Computing Machinery Chapter Excellence Award. New Jersey Institute of Technology Accreditation Details

On November 16, 2017, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) Board of Trustees accepted a Fifth-Year Periodic Review Report from the New Jersey Institute of Technology to keep Level VI accreditation valid through 2021-22 under President Joel Bloom, EdD, who earned the NRBP Kevin McKenna Leadership Award. Located 85 miles down Interstate 95 in Philadelphia, this esteemed eight-territory East Coast Region accreditor is recognized by the U.S. Education Department to review NJIT’s six schools with 126 degrees. Further, the Martin Tuchman School of Management has been accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) since 1988. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) also approved the Ying Wu College of Computing in October 1995.

New Jersey Institute of Technology Application Requirements

Enrollment at the New Jersey Institute of Technology is classified as “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s since 5,171 of the 8,123 Fall 2018 applicants were picked for 64 percent acceptance. First-year Highlanders seeking the B.S. in Bioinformatics must verify a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Freshmen generally rank in the top 25 percent of their classes with GPAs above 3.0. The Class of 2022 reported an average GPA of 3.59. Mid-range admitted SAT scores were 1190-1380. The middle 50th percentile had ACT scores of 24-30. Ying Wu College of Computing transfers must achieve 2.50 or better GPAs on 12-75 accredited credits. International learners must be fluent with at least 79 TOEFL iBT, 550 TOEFL pBT, or 6.0 IELTS scores. The Graduate Admissions Office looks for 2.80 or higher GPAs during a four-year bachelor’s prep. The M.S. in Applied Statistics requires 12 credits of undergrad math courses. The Ph.D. in Business Data Science mandates 3.0 GPAs in prerequisites like Data Structures and Algorithms. Post-grads also need a minimum 143 verbal and 151 quantitative GRE score.

The New Jersey Institute of Technology has freshman deadlines of November 15th for Early Action I, December 15th for Early Action II, and March 1st for Regular Decision. B.S. in Bioinformatics transfers have until June 1st for Fall or November 15th for Spring. Non-U.S. residents should file by March 1st or October 15th. Master’s programs are open until June 1st and November 15th. The Ph.D. in Data Science closes on December 15th each year. Accordingly, complete the NJIT Application online for $75. Tuition and Financial Aid

For 2019-20, the New Jersey Institute of Technology billed in-state B.S. in Bioinformatics majors $14,448 annually. Non-resident bachelor’s tuition was $30,160 per year. Mandatory undergrad fees were $3,226. Living at the Newark campus’ dorms like Cypress Hall added $12,995 for room and board. NJIT budgeted $2,900 for books and supplies. Other indirect costs were about $1,200. Annual undergrad attendance was $21,774 in-state and $37,486 out-of-state. Graduate programs charged New Jerseyans $20,624 and non-residents $30,540 per year full-time. Required post-grad fees were $3,204 yearly. Online e-Tuition was priced $1,307 per credit though.

According to the NCES College Navigator, the Office of Financial Aid Services on the Student Mall’s Lower Level gets 92 percent of new full-time NJIT Highlanders tuition assistance averaging $14,602 each for $13.11 million total. University funds include the Presidential Scholarship, Dean’s Scholarship, Faculty Scholarship, National Merit Scholarship, William Guttenburg Endowed Scholarship, PS&S Annual Scholarship, Harold & Dorothy Snyder Scholarship, Peter Jensen Memorial Scholarship, Levendusky Alumni Scholarship, Construction Roundtable Scholarship, Edward Bloustein Distinguished Scholarship, and Secure Computing Initiative Scholarship. The Albert Dorman Honors College Scholarship presents up to $10,000 to undergrads in the top 50+ percentile with GPAs above 3.25. The Dr. Anthony Kahng Memorial Fellowship supports minority Ph.D. in Business Data Science majors with unmet needs. Federal resources, such as the Pell Grant or Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, need FAFSA forms coded 002621. New Jerseyans also utilize the Governor’s Urban Scholarship, World Trade Center Scholarship, STARS Scholarship, College Bound Grant, Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Scholarship, and more.
