Data Science at Regis University
Regis University appears in our ranking of the 15 Most Affordable Master’s in Data Science Online.
Regis University doesn’t offer undergraduate degrees in data science. There are two graduate programs and two certificates that can be earned in the discipline, however. The Master of Science in Data Science is a 36 credit-hour program that is offered in an accelerated form, online or in a traditional classroom setting. Courses in the online format follow an eight-week sequence. The traditional program is offered twice a year at the Denver Tech Center in a cohort system. There are eighteen credit-hours of core courses like Ethics, Privacy and Social Justice in Data Science and Information Science Research Methods. Students also take twelve credit-hours in electives, choosing from individual offerings like Artificial Intelligence and Exploratory Data Analysis or taking a four-course Data Engineering set. The program includes two required practicums.
The Certificate in Data Science is also offered in traditional or online formats. It is taught in a cohort system and includes twelve credit-hours contained in four courses: Data Engineering, Introduction to Data Science, Data Analytics and a practicum. All four of the courses may be applied toward a Master’s Degree in Data Science.
The Executive Information Technology Certificate is a twelve credit-hour program that gives executives a basic understanding of the problems associated with database development and usage of technology (with both positive and negative results). Though it is not specifically a Data Science certificate, many of the courses contained in the program are valuable to data science students. The certificate can be earned online or in a traditional format.
The other program in this discipline is the Master of Science in Human Resource Management. Although not technically a Data Science degree, courses in the program help students understand analytics and the application of statistics and analytics to performance metrics. This program contains thirty credit-hours including a capstone project. Classes are offered evenings in classrooms or online. Courses are presented in an eight-week accelerated format. While the eighteen credits of required courses pertain to Human Resource Management, there are nine credits in the core courses including Logic and Critical Analysis, Leading in a New Era and Business Intelligence and Analytics.
About Regis University
Regis University is a private school that is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. It originated in a college established by Jesuits in Las Vegas, New Mexico, called Sacred Heart College. The monks were asked to bring the school to Colorado, and they did so in 1884, merging with another Catholic school. The resulting institution, College of the Sacred Heart, included a high school program which was later discontinued. The school became a university in 1991.
Regis University is comprised of five colleges and two institutes. It is ranked by the US News and World Report as # 23 of Regional Universities-West. Most classes have fewer than twenty students, and the student-to-faculty ratio is 13:1. An unusual aspect of the school is its dedication to helping the community. Regis has a long-lived program to assist Denver’s homeless population.

The school is accredited by the North-Central Association of the Higher Learning Commission
Regis University Application Requirements
The most important aspect of applying to Regis is using the right application. The school has a general freshman application, an online Common Application for first-year students, and a Common Application for Graduate Students. Applications are also specific to cohort learning, certificates, and online programs. Completion of the Freshman Application waives the application fee and students are automatically considered for school scholarships. Others pay a $50 non-refundable application fee.
First-time applicants must submit their official high school transcripts and SAT or ACT test scores. The applications also ask for a letter of recommendation. Graduate students apply using the online Common Application. In general, programs ask for official transcripts, GRE or MAT scores, resumes, personal statements and letters of recommendation (up to three). There is a required personal interview for graduate students as well.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The average undergraduate tuition at Regis University is $36,810. That figure is misleading because programs and departments at Regis set their own rates. The tuition for undergraduate students in the College of Business and Economics is $18,230 per semester for a full-time student. Part-time students pay $1,139 per credit hour. Room and board additional $11,560. There are also fees and miscellaneous charges plus personal expenses to consider. Graduate students in Information Technology and Computer Science programs pay $780 per credit-hour.
College educations are expensive, and few students expect to leave school without student debt. It is wise to seek as much “free” money (scholarships and grants that don’t have to be repaid) as possible, then to fill in the gaps with loans and other sources. The first step is completing the FAFSA form. The Free Application for Federal Student Assistance helps the government award financial assistance to students depending upon family or personal income. Students qualify for the Pell or SEOG Grants, student or parent loans and work-study opportunities.
After receiving their awards letter from FAFSA, students can apply for other assistance. Colorado has several scholarships that are needs-based and some, like the Boettcher Scholarship, that require academic excellence of applicants. At Regis University, 97 percent of students receive some type of financial aid. Regis has grants and scholarships for students based on academic excellence, the student’s major, athletic and extracurricular activity participation and community service among other criteria. High school students can even qualify for awards before attending Regis by taking college courses and even having perfect attendance.
Students who apply all the scholarship and grant money they were awarded and who still have student debt can take out student loans. These are loans with lower interest rates and with an option to defer repayment until after graduation. The loans are also extended to parents so that they can help pay for their child’s degree program. Part-time jobs are another option to meet education debts, and students who were awarded work-study opportunities by FAFSA can take off-campus jobs that help them pay their debt while gaining valuable work experience.
Higher education is expensive, but Regis University students have several options to meet the debts incurred while earning their degrees.
