The Van Loan School at Endicott College offers a Master of Science in Bioinformatics that provides students with technical abilities in data acquisition and mining, computer programming, algorithm design, statistical analysis, and research methods. The program is presented in an interdisciplinary and applied learning atmosphere that incorporates theory and real-world application. It is ideal for working professionals and requires a total of 36 credit hours.

Students have the ability to choose between a thesis experience or capstone internship that offers opportunities to boost critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The core courses include Introduction to Programming for Bioinformatics, Probability and Statistics with Programming, Molecular Genetics and Lab, Protein Biochemistry and Lab, Advanced Programming for Bioinformatics, Biological Sequence Analysis, Data Mining for Bioinformatics, and Cheminformatics and Drug Discovery. The program is offered both on-site in Beverly, Massachusetts and online.

About Endicott College

Endicott College is a private, coeducational institution of higher learning located in Beverly, Massachusetts. It was the first university in the nation to require nearly all students to complete internships. It was founded in 1939 as a school for women. It was established based on the idea that higher education should combine theory and practice.

In 1941, the first graduating class consisted of 20 students. The college gained approval to offer Associate in Science and Associate in Arts degrees in 1944. Endicott gained accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges in 1952. It received four-year status in 1988. It began admitting men in 1994. Graduate programs were introduced in 1996. Endicott College started offering doctoral degrees in 2012. Today, Endicott College is home to more than 5,000 students on its 235-acre campus. The student body is made up of about 3,000 traditional undergraduate students, and 2,000 accelerated undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students. Endicott College functions on the 4-1-4-based academic calendar.

Endicott College is dedicated to experiential learning that blends theory and hands-on career-related experiences. It offers more than 80 degree programs through eight schools: School of Arts and Sciences, School of Education, School of Business, School of Nursing, School of Communication, School of Hospitality Management, School of Sport Science and Fitness Studies, and School of Visual and Performing Arts. The most popular majors include business administration and management, nursing, hospitality management, sport and fitness administration, and psychology. Endicott College is a career-focused institution that offers professional work experiences and requires internship components in most of the programs. Nearly all freshman and sophomore students must finish a 120-hour internship on an annual basis. Junior and senior students are required to finish a semester-long internship. The programs are competency-based to allow students to attain experience in their field of study from the time they begin taking classes. The student to faculty ratio is 14 to one, with about 60 percent of classes with less than 20 students. The average class size is around 17 students.

Federal Work-Study

The Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a program funded by the federal government available to students who demonstrate a financial need. Students who qualify are able to work part-time, up to 20 hours per week, to earn money to pay for their college education. Both campus-based and off-campus positions are available. The program encourages students to seek jobs that are related to their academic program or those that benefit the community. Students make no less than the current federal minimum wage. The actual pay depends on each student’s situation.
