Five UC-Denver Programs for Big Data Careers

Home to J.P. Morgan Center, the Business School grants an MS in Business Analytics for University of Colorado-Denver graduates to practice using Simio software to draw reliable data conclusions on organizational effectiveness. Directed by Dr. Deborah Kellogg, the 30-credit, STEM-designed major offers a Dual MBA Option atop courses like Predictive Modeling and Marketing Research.
Entirely online, the MS in Information Systems logs into Canvas for a 30-credit, AACSB-accredited Business Intelligence Specialization outlined by Dr. Jahangir Karimi about data administration. The College of Engineering & Applied Science delivers a 36-credit MS in Computer Science under Dr. Farnoush Banaei-Kashani with a Data Science Track focused on biomedical research. Similarly, the Colorado School of Public Health introduced a Data Science Analytics Minor for the Anschutz Campus’ 36-credit MS in Biostatistics overseen by Dr. Debashis Ghosh. Since Fall 2016, the 60-credit Ph.D. in Computer Science and Information Systems has also awarded a Big Data Science Fellowship worth $34,000 yearly for the most advanced DECENT Lab training.
About University of Colorado-Denver
The University of Colorado-Denver originated in Fall 1883 when an inaugural class of two entered Boulder’s Old Main for the School of Medicine. In 1910, Governor John F. Shafroth approved a state constitutional amendment to add additional locations. Fifteen years later, it relocated to Ninth Ave. in Denver as the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Meanwhile, the C.A. Johnson Building was erected for another UC Extension Center in 1938. After acquiring the famed Tramway Company Building in 1956, it was renamed the University of Colorado-Denver Center on January 11, 1973. That year, a 127-acre Auraria Campus was added near Elitch Gardens with the Community College of Denver. Fast forward to August 2011 and three entities merged into one legally called the University of Colorado-Denver. Awarded the $1.28 CIBER Grant, UC-Denver now educates 19,558 Lynx from 65 countries online and in-person with 140+ clubs like Information Systems Association.
The U.S. News & World Report ranked UC-Denver the 205th best national university, 112th top public college, 83rd best statistics school, and 87th top computer science program. On Niche, UCD boasts America’s 103rd best faculty, 186th most diversity, 305th top business courses, and 306th best academics. Times Higher Education placed the University of Colorado-Denver 248th overall. Forbes declared UC-Denver the 186th best research producer, 85th top mid-sized employer, and 183rd best value. In October 2018, Business Insider proclaimed Colorado the country’s third-best economy. The Center for World University Rankings named UCD 97th for research influence and 81st for patents. Washington Monthly picked UC-Denver for the West’s 188th best buck. PayScale also recorded the 417th biggest mid-career income average of $94,000 here.
University of Colorado-Denver Accreditation Details
On July 18, 2011, the University of Colorado-Denver was reaffirmed by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association (HLC-NCA) via the PEAQ Pathway for the maximum 10-year Level VI accreditation under its 21st president, Dr. Bruce D. Benson, who earned the Steamboat Institute’s Courage in Education Award. Located 1,003 miles east on Interstate 80 in Chicago, this 19-state Rockies Region accreditor is recognized by the U.S. Education Department to evaluate UC-Denver’s 45 baccalaureate, 67 master’s, two specialist, 40 doctoral, and 199 certificate offerings. Particularly, the College of Engineering & Applied Science is approved by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) through 2024. The Colorado School of Public Health was accredited by the Council on Education in Public Health (CEPH) in October 2010. The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) also reviewed the MS in Business Analytics in April 2017.
University of Colorado-Denver Application Requirements
Enrolling at the University of Colorado-Denver is labeled “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s since only 7,418 of the 11,373 Fall 2017 applicants conquered the 65 percent acceptance rate. The Graduate School only admits incoming Lynx who have graduated or are in the final semester of accredited four-year bachelor’s majors. The MSCS Data Science Track prefers ABET-accredited programs in computer science or engineering fields. MS in Biostatistics cohorts need three prerequisites: Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Statistics. Experience using SAS software and R programming is expected. Most master’s programs set a cumulative GPA minimum of 3.0. The Big Data Science Ph.D. Fellowship requires superior ability often with GPAs above 3.5. Business School entrants holding 3.25 GPAs or better could qualify for GMAT waivers. Otherwise, scoring at least 500 on the Graduate Management Admission Test is mandatory. Strong UC-Denver candidates also exceed the 310 GRE General Test mark. On average, Data Science Analytics MS Minors have 155.8 Verbal and 153.5 Quantitative scores.
The University of Colorado-Denver enforces Business School deadlines of June 30th for Fall, November 30th for Spring, and April 30th for Summer MS starts. Domestic entrants to the College of Engineering & Applied Science have until May 1st or November 15th. Foreign MS or Ph.D. students meeting the 6.5 IELTS requirement must apply before April 15th or September 15th. The MS in Biostatistics welcomes candidates until December 1st only. Create CU-Denver accounts to submit the $50 Degree-Seeking Graduate Application online. Official bachelor’s transcripts are mailed to Campus Box 131 at 1201 Larimer Street in Denver, CO 80217. Test results are generated with GRE code 7844 or GMAT code MPB-0G-78. Additional items include the cover checklist, three recommendation letters, two-page personal statement, résumé or curriculum vitae, doctoral essays, and international packet. Tuition and Financial Aid
For 2018-19, the University of Colorado-Denver is billing in-state Business School graduates $626 per credit. Non-resident MS in Business Analytics majors pay $1,378 per credit. Online MS in Information Systems students always spend $731 per credit. The College of Engineering & Applied Sciences charges Coloradoans $621 and non-residents $1,365 per credit. School of Public Health cohorts have MS in Biostatistics tuition of $525 to $1,287 per credit. Added expenses are the $150 international student fee, $94 new student fee, $210 student life fee, and $2,350 health insurance fee. Average post-grad attendance equals $7,839 in-state and $23,499 out-of-state. Please note living at the Mountain West campus’ housing costs $3,200 to $5,985 each semester.
According to the NCES College Navigator, the Financial Aid Office in Student Commons gets 40 percent of UC-Denver Lynx clawing into packages averaging $6,119 each for $35.63 million total. Graduate funds include the Carolyn Lee Henderson Scholarship, Dean’s Super Merit Scholarship, MS in Business Analytics Scholarship, Robert Reynolds Scholarship, Schuman Outstanding Scholarship, Steve Golter Scholarship, Newmont Mining Scholarship, Shirley Ann Cismoski Scholarship, Mieczyslaw Altman Endowed Scholarship, and Terry A. Fischer Scholarship. The Western Regional Graduate Program gifts in-state tuition to residents of 14 states west of the Mississippi. MS in Biostatistics: Data Science Analytics Minor students can claim $5,000 from the Colorado SPH Diversity Award. The Graduate School offers paid assistantships requiring bachelor’s GPAs above 3.0. Decision Sciences Merit Scholarships present $1,500 per term to MS in Business Analytics majors exceeding 3.6 GPAs. Centennial State natives pursue the Colorado Department of Higher Education’s $5,000 Graduate Grant. Submitting FAFSA applications coded 004508 will also calculate Federal Direct and Plus loan amounts.
