About Concordia University Irvine
In the mid-1950s, a group of Southern California Lutherans gathered to create a Lutheran college for the Pacific Southwest. In 1962, the group achieved that goal when The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod agreed to build the school. Irvine was chosen as the site of the new institute of higher learning and classes were held on the campus in 1976 at what was then known as Christ College Irvine. Initial enrollment was 36 students who attended in a single campus building.

There are over 4,300 students enrolled and all programs include the school’s Lutheran heritage. The school focuses on living out the theology of “Grace Alone. Faith Alone.” Grace alone explains that God loves, forgives and saves because of the work of Christ, not because of what people do. It is based on the belief that even someone’s best efforts are never good enough to earn salvation but God declares them righteous in Christ’s name because of faith alone. It is the Lutheran belief that people are not saved by following a list of rules but through faith in Christ.
