Data Science Degree Programs Guide - Top Master's Degrees-01The demand for database administrators is on the rise according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which predicts an increase of 11% through 2026. Database administrators use software to organize and store data, protect the data from unauthorized access, update permissions, and merge old databases into new ones. Some database administrators work with the physical and technical aspects of a database. These DBAs usually have a background in system architecture. Other DBAs support applications that work with a database. Database administrators can get advanced training and education through an online master’s in database administration, computer science, information technology, or information systems. In these programs, students can take coursework that directly applies to the DBA role.

We created a ranking of the top 20 online master’s degrees in database administration. These may be stand-alone programs, concentration areas within IT or computer science departments, or other programs with substantial database coursework that could lead to a role as a DBA. We used College Navigator and our own online research to find schools offering these types of programs. We then researched the schools to gain more knowledge about the programs they offer. To be considered for our ranking, schools must be regionally accredited and offer a curriculum with coursework in database administration or management. Schools that made our top 20 have faculty who are industry experts. Each online program provides students with mentoring and networking opportunities. For the purpose of this ranking, we defined an online program as one having a significant number of courses available online. We then applied our ranking criteria to come up with the top 20 online master’s in database administration programs.

Rating and Ranking Methodology
Average Graduate Tuition

  • Less than $10,000 per year= 5 Points
  • $10,000 to $15,000 per year= 4 Points
  • $15,001 to $20,000 per year= 3 Points
  • $20,001 to $25,000 per year= 2 Points
  • Greater than $25,001 per year= 1 Point

We also looked at a school’s student/faculty ratio and awarded more points to schools with a lower ratio. We believe a lower student to faculty ratio allows students to receive individualized attention and support throughout the program.
