The Bachelor of Science in Informatics at UC Irvine provides students with an understanding of user interfaces, how people use information technology and how to turn findings into useable products. The major in Data Science prepares students for a career in data analysis, providing students with foundational statistical concepts as well as computational principles. They are provided a strong foundation in statistics and computer science with instruction in algorithms, machine learning, information visualization, and Bayesian statistics. About University of California Irvine

The University of California Irvine began as part of the California Master Plan for Higher Education in the 1960s. The school, along with schools in San Diego and Santa Cruz, was designed to meet the need for higher education which grew as soldiers returned from World War II and took advantage of the G.I. Bill. Irvine Ranch was chosen as the location of the new school in order to accommodate a growing population and as a master planned community. Unlike the other two colleges which were named after the city where they were established, this campus was named after James Irvine, the administrator of the Irvine Ranch.

Initially, Irvine Ranch sold 1,000 acres to the school as they were not permitted to donate land to a public entity. The cost for the acreage was only $1 and the school purchased an additional 510 in 1964 for expansion.

University of California Irvine Accreditation Detail

The University of California Irvine is accredited by the Senior Commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. As part of the accreditation process, the school undergoes periodic evaluations to confirm they meet the standards set forth by the Association and the school agrees to address any areas identified as needing improvement during the evaluation. Programs throughout the school are also accredited by industry-specific agencies.

University of California Irvine Application Requirements

Applicants who have not earned college credit after high school graduation are considered freshmen. They must provide an official transcript along with official high school transcripts. They must have a 3.0 GPA in cores subjects if they are California resident and a 3.4 GPA if they are from other states.

Applicants who have earned 60 semester or 90 quarter credit hours may apply as transfer students. Thy must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. They must have a 2.4 GPA or higher although some degree programs require a 3.0 GPA. Up to 70 semester or 105 quarter credit hours may be transferred.

Those who wish to apply for a graduate program at UC Irvine must have a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university. They must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Each program may have additional application requirements so students are encouraged to speak to a graduate admissions counselor before applying.

Tuition at the University of California Irvine is as follows:

Undergraduate California resident – $14,749.47 annually
Undergraduate Non-residents – $16,493.50 annually
Graduate California residents – $16,493.50 annually
Graduate non-residents – $31,395.50 annually

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required for any financial assistance. Aid may be offered in the form of grants or scholarships which do not need to be repaid after graduation. Students may also qualify for work-study programs that offset the cost of education with employment. Loans may also be offered but it is important to remember they must be repaid after graduation. Graduate students may qualify for teaching and research assistant employment as well as fellowships.

The University of California Irvine offers several data informatics and statistics programs. Although a full degree in these areas is not available online, many courses required for the degree may be available in an online format.
