About the University of Iowa
In 1847, Iowa became a state. Just 59 days later, the University of Iowa opened its doors. The university has distinguished itself throughout its history, fearlessly bucking tradition. It was the first college in America to be coeducational. It was the first college in America, too, to admit students regardless of race. Recognizing the power of the arts in society, it was also the first college to offer a Master of Fine Arts degree.
Its students and faculty have been leaders in their fields almost since the university’s inception. Professor Van Allen has the Van Allen belts named after him. Women wrote the first theses of students at the university. Physical education professor David Armbruster, who was also the swimming coach, invented the butterfly and was the first swimming coach to instruct swimmers in the flip turn. Many more “firsts” happened at the University of Iowa, such as the first black woman to receive a Ph.D. in political science, the first educational television station in America, the first integrated athletes to be named All-American, and so on.
The university also founded the Writers’ Workshop in 1936, and even today, it is the most highly regarded symposium in the world. Its instructors and participants have earned more than four dozen Pulitzer Prizes, and its selection criteria are so stringent that in one period of time, only 135 applicants were selected from more than 5,000 applications.
