Data science is the art of extracting pertinent raw information from data systems and translating it into meaningful communication. The University of Nebraska at Omaha has a strong computer program and several nationally recognized resources for computer students.

The undergraduate degree in data science is actually a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics with a concentration in Data Science. The degree contains 120 hours including general education courses in addition to the computer science classes. The program is built around eight areas: Data Visualization; Scientific Methods; Statistical Modeling; Statistical Computing; real World Data Applications; Data Consulting; Data Research and Data Technology. Required courses in the program include Introduction to Probability I and II; Deterministic Operations Research Models; Time Series and others.

The Bachelor of Science in Bioinformatics is a 120 credit-hour degree program that contains 46 hours of general education courses and 77 to 79 courses in the major. It includes courses in biology, chemistry, computer science, and mathematics.

The university also offers a 120 credit-hour Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, Innovation. Students have the freedom to design their own programs building them around career goals in entrepreneurship. The framework of the degree includes 46 hours of general education courses, 48 hours from the College of Information Sciences and Technology, three-to-five hours in mathematics electives and 33 hours of courses in the emphasis area. Students are required to complete a capstone project.

The Master of Science in Mathematics is also available with a concentration in Data Science. Students build the program around three related courses. The final exam includes a one-week take-home exam and a three-hour open-book exam. Courses in the 30-hour program include Business Foreseeing; Introduction to Probability and Statistics I and II; Introduction to Data Science; Network Programming; Data Mining and a master’s project.

The Master of Business Administration is available with a concentration in Business Analytics. Courses included are Quantitative Applications in Economics; Econometrics; Tools for Data; Business Forecasting and Data Analysis from Scratch.

The MBA plus Master of Science in Management Information Systems is a dual degree that is offered through the Department of Business Administration in the College of Business Administration and through the Department of Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis in the College of Information Science and Technology.

The Master of Science in Biomedical Informatics is a 36 credit-hour program for which students must have mastery of several prerequisites. Students who must take these courses may not count them toward the degree. Required courses include Advances in Biomedical Informatics which the student must take every semester, Public Health Genomes; Advanced Systems Analysis and Design; Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and others. Students select either the Bioinformatics track or the Health Informatics track. The program is also available as a Ph.D. program.

There are undergraduate and graduate certificates available from the university in data analysis. Of the online programs offered by the University of Nebraska at Omaha, only the Bachelor of Science in Management of Information Science is available online. This 120 credit-hour degree can be earned in one of several concentrations including Internet Technologies for Management of Information Science Majors, Global Internet Technology Leadership and Marketing, Business Application Development and Management, Information Assurance Concentration for MIS Majors and Audits and Control.

About The University of Nebraska at Omaha

This university was founded in 1908 by faculty members from the Omaha Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Although it offered a religion-based education, it was non-sectarian and as such offered an alternative to the other religious institutions in the area. It is the only university in Nebraska that has ABET accreditation for its information systems programs.

The school also houses the Peter Kiewit Institute which is A $70 million computer science facility. Within that facility, the Holland Computing Center is home to the Firefly Super Computer. Students who apply to this school as first-time freshmen are encouraged to do so through the online application portal. There is a $45 non-refundable application fee that must be paid online or by mail. Applicants must arrange to have their high schools submit their official transcripts to the university. After taking the SAT or ACT, they should arrange to have the testing agencies send those official results as well.

Students who apply as graduates apply to the graduate school first, completing the online form. They must also pay the $45 fee at the time of their application. They should have the institution where they earned their undergraduate degrees submit those official transcripts to the school. They then apply to the department which houses their degree program. Each department has its own requisites such as letters of recommendation and resumes.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The undergraduate tuition at the University of Nebraska at Omaha is $7,980. Housing and meal plans add $9,920. Considering books and supplies and personal expenses, the school estimates the average cost of attendance for undergraduates as $22,816 per year.
