About Indiana University South Bend

In 1922, Indiana University South Bend opened its doors as an extension campus of Indiana University Bloomington. Classes were initially held at Central High School in downtown South Bend, taught by local high school teachers who held master’s level degrees. A few were taught by Bloomington faculty who traveled once each week to teach classes. During the Great Depression, the South Bend programs were especially beneficial to those who could not afford to travel to Bloomington.

In 1961, construction began on the first permanent building on land purchased along the St. Joseph River. Initially, the new campus was called the IU Center but was renamed the South Bend-Mishawaka Campus in 1962. At first, the new school only offered two-year degree programs until four-year programs were added in 1967. In 1968, the school became Indiana University South Bend and the first master’s degrees earned in 1970.

Today, Indiana University South Bend continues to have a small campus feel with large campus amenities. The school offers almost 100 degree options at both the undergraduate and graduate level. The campus offers seven different schools as well as many online options for students who need additional flexibility.
