The University of Michigan-Ann Arbor’s School of Information (UMSI) is the first iSchool to offer integrated Master of Science in Information and Bachelor of Science in Information degrees. The Bachelor of Science in Information degree is an interdisciplinary program which examines “major issues at the intersection of people, information, and technology.” The program offers frequent faculty interaction and emphasizes high-level direct experience and research engagement. The Master of Science in Information (MSI) degree at UMSI includes areas of interest in Data Science/Data Analytics/Computational Social Science, Digital Archives and Library Science/Preservation, and User Experience (UX) Research and Design/Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)/Social Computing. Students may also select a Master of Health Informatics program focused on data science in healthcare environments.

UMSI also offers a Ph.D. in Information. The Ph.D. in Information program at UMSI is a full-time degree which emphasizes research and scholarly dissemination, teaching, service, and outreach. The program is intended to prepare doctoral candidates for work in industry, “think tanks,” universities, and government research labs and agencies.

All of UMSI’s programs focus on practical engagement and career development, including fieldwork obtained through internships offering the opportunity to solve practical, real-world information problems.

University of Michigan-Ann Arbor Accreditation Details

The University of Michigan-Ann Arbor is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), which is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). One of the six regional agencies granting accreditation to colleges and universities, the NCA is part of the national college and university accreditation structure. U-M, as a large public research university, has focused on “internationalization” as a structure for its reaccreditation processes. U-M’s accreditation status enables students to qualify for Federal, state, and other forms of student aid.

University of Michigan School of Information (UMSI) Application Requirements

UMSI seeks diverse students in its Bachelor of Science in Information Programs who have a strong academic record, demonstrated leadership capacity, and who have engaged with community or campus organizations. Bachelor’s degree students must complete an application for admission to the University and may apply to be admitted as high school students, transfer students from other colleges and universities, or as sophomore cross-transfer students from other U-M schools and colleges. Applicants must complete the Common Application and submit other required documentation and fees by February 1 each year.

In the Master of Science in Information program, UMSI seeks academically diverse students with backgrounds in social sciences, education, engineering, humanities, and health sciences. To apply for admission to UMSI, students must have completed a bachelor’s degree from an accredited or recognized college or university with at least a 3.0 GPA. Applicants use UMSI’s online application and pay a one-time application fee of $75 for U.S. residents and $90 for international applicants. The application should be accompanied by:

  • Transcripts
  • A statement of purpose (4-6 pages)
  • A personal statement (1-2 pages)
  • Resume
  • Three letters of recommendation

International students must also demonstrate the ability to complete coursework in English by achieving a score of 100 or higher in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a score of 7.0 or higher on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam.

Applicants for the Ph.D. in Information from UMSI must complete the Rackham Graduate School online application using ApplyWeb, identifying the School of Information as the desired Ph.D. program.

The deadline for applying to the Ph.D. program is December 1. The application must include:

  • A Statement of Purpose Essay identifying your selected research area and two to three potential UMSI faculty advisors. (4-6 pages)
  • A Personal History Statement (1-2 pages)
  • Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Official Transcripts for undergraduate and graduate coursework.
  • Three Letters of Recommendation
  • Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores taken within the prior five years
  • Documentation of English Language Proficiency

Tuition and Financial Aid

Undergraduate tuition and fees for U-M are $15,262 a year for Freshman/Sophomore (Lower Division) in-state students and $17,188 a year for Junior/Senior (Upper Division) in-state students. Graduate tuition and fees are $23,456 a year for in-state students. Out-of-state tuition and fees for Lower Division students are $49,350 and for Upper Division, $52,814. Out-of-state graduate tuition and fees are $47,006.

According to U.S. News and World Report, about 37 percent of U-M undergraduate students receive financial aid. Applicants should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and complete a CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE. The PROFILE has an associated fee which may be waived on request. Assistance with undergraduate and graduate tuition and fees is available through many different grants, scholarships, loans, and student employment opportunities.
