The CUNY School of Professional Studies offers a Master of Science in Data Science, formerly known as the Master of Science in Data Analytics, in an online format that allows students to enter the fast-growing field of data science and analysis. Students gain hands-on experience in programming languages and modeling. Students develop skills in languages that include R and Python which are in-demand skills in today’s complex data world. Students build predictive and prescriptive models and are provided experience presenting their projects to groups as part of the curriculum. There is a Capstone requirement that provides students with an understanding of real-world problems and how to address them using data.
In order to be accepted into the program, students must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher in undergraduate studies and must be able to demonstrate skills in:
- Analytical thinking
- Linear algebra
- Programming
- Relational databases
- Statistics and probability
The program is offered in a completely online format allowing students who may have work, family or social obligations to complete their degree.

The CUNY School of Professional Studies has launched over 20 degrees since 2006 with enrollment growing to over 3,200 students. The school was created by the Board of Trustees in 2003 in order to meet the needs of working adults. The school offers undergraduate, graduate and advanced certificates in online as well as on-campus formats.

The CUNY School of Professional Studies Application Requirements
Students who wish to attend the CUNY School of Professional Studies must have a minimum of 24 credits from a regionally accredited institution and a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or more. No more than 90 credits may be transferred into a 120-credit degree program. A personal essay is also required for admission.
Graduate candidates must complete an online application and must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution. Students must have a GPA of 3.0 or better to qualify. Students must submit transcripts from all colleges and universities attended as well as a resume and personal statement. All graduate applicants must submit to an individual interview which can be conducted over the phone.
The CUNY School of Professional Studies Tuition and Financial Aid
Undergraduate tuition at CUNY SPS is $285 per credit hour and graduate tuition is $40 per credit hour. The low tuition rates allow 80 percent of undergraduate students to graduate debt-free. CUNY SPS places affordability and value at the forefront of all that they do. Financial aid counselors work with students to combine state and federal funds along with scholarships, grants, loans or other benefits, including veteran and employer, in order to help students achieve their higher education goals.
Undergraduate students must be enrolled for at least six credits each semester and be in a degree program to qualify for financial aid. Students must be in good academic standing and must complete the requirements for an undergraduate degree within six years. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to qualify. If the student or their parents are residents of the state of New York, they must also complete the New York State Tuition Assistance Program Application.
Graduate students may qualify for loans and scholarships to cover the cost of tuition. Students must be enrolled in at least six credits each semester and be enrolled in a degree program. Students must be in good academic standing and able to graduate from a Master’s degree within three years. Graduate students must maintain a 3.0 GPA in order to remain eligible for financial aid. The CUNY School of Professional Studies graduate students must complete the FAFSA to be eligible for tuition assistance.
