Syracuse University offers a Master of Science in Applied Data Science. Students are provided a mixture of technical and theoretical skills with an education that can be tailored to fit their career goals. Students develop an understanding of information science and management principles. The program focuses on data science but includes an understanding of how to handle data, how to capture data as well as how to manage and analyze data. Students also learn how to communicate the information data provides in order to make informed decisions. There is a strong focus on research in the program as well. The program is available in both a traditional and online format. The online program provides students with the same rigorous curriculum students in the traditional program must complete. The program is 36-credit hours that provides students with an understanding of analytics in fields like accounting, finance, marketing and supply chain management. Students use data collection, data visualization, analysis of patterns and statistics as well as data mining to provide company leaders with information necessary to grow in their industry. Students complete core classes in Accounting, Finance, and Marketing Analytics as well as Principles of Management Science. Students may also customize their degree with electives.

About Syracuse University

Although popular history indicates that Genesee College in Lima was a predecessor of Syracuse University, this is not the case. There were efforts in 1866 to move Genesee to Syracuse, but the residents of Lima resisted. Despite the Board of Genesee College obtaining permission to move the school in 1869, an injunction kept the school in Lima. Genesee College remained in operation until 1875 when it was dissolved.

Syracuse University got its start at the Methodist State Convention in Syracuse, New York in 1870. A resolution was passed at the convention to raise $500,000 to start a university with the City of Syracuse subscribing $100,000 to the fund. Reverend Jesse T. Peck, who had been elected President of the new school, suggested the Board of Trustees purchase land in the southeastern section of the city. A university charter and certificate of incorporation for Syracuse University was signed in March 1870.

While the first building on the campus was under construction, classes were held in the upper floors of the Myers Block in downtown Syracuse. By 1872, Syracuse University had developed programs for three fields of study that were four years long and the school moved to its current campus in 1873.

Today, there are over 20,000 students attending Syracuse University in both undergraduate and graduate programs.

Syracuse University Accreditation Details

Syracuse University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Regional accreditation indicates that the school offers programs that prepare students for careers in their field of study. The university agrees to periodic reviews by the Commission and to accept any recommendations for improvement identified during the review. It also indicates that the school has the resources necessary to meet their goals and mission.

Syracuse University Admission Requirements

Students who wish to enter the Master of Science in Business Analytics program must complete an online application and provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. One transcript must show the conferring of a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university. Students must also provide two letters of recommendation and a resume. Official GMAT or GRE scores are also required. Students must complete the essay found on the application and must answer three questions in a five-minute video. Students who wish to enroll in the Master of Science in Applied Data Science must complete a graduate program application and provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Students must submit a 500-word personal statement and two letters of recommendation. Official GRE scores are also required. Students must submit a resume and may be required to submit a video submission as well. The deadline to apply for the fall semester is February 1 and the deadline to apply for spring is November 15.

Students who wish to enter the online MS in Applied Data Science must complete an online application and provide official transcripts. Students must provide official GRE scores and a personal statement. A current resume and two letters of recommendation are required as well. There is an application fee, although the fee is waived for active duty service members and veterans, current Syracuse University students as well as Syracuse alumni and employees. The deadline to file for classes starting in July is May 8. For classes starting in June, the deadline is July 31 and for classes starting in January, the deadline is November 5.

Syracuse University Tuition and Financial Aid

Full-time undergraduate tuition at Syracuse University is $45,150 per year. On-campus graduate students pay $28,062 per year. The online Master of Science in Applied Data Science tuition is $1,650 per credit hour plus an additional technology fee each term. The entire degree will cost approximately $59,400.

Financial aid is available in the form of grants, scholarships, loans and work-study programs. At Syracuse University, approximately 75 percent of undergraduate students receive financial aid. In order to qualify for aid, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA must be renewed each year.
