About Walden University

While a faculty member at the University of California, Harold “Bud” Hodgkinson wrote an essay that described a university where students and faculty worked side-by-side on research. The paper, published in 1969 and entitled Walden U: A Working Paper, inspired Bernie and Rita Turner to develop Walden University. The teachers and social activists worked with Hodgkinson to create an institute of higher learning that was more student-centered than any other university in the country.

Despite the fact that the concept of Walden University was developed more than 30 years ago, the school still focuses on collaboration between faculty and students. It is Walden’s belief that students will apply the hands-on experience they gain while a student to the workplace and in the community. When the school began, it offered only doctorate degrees in education but now offers Management, Psychology as well as Health and Human Services degrees at the doctorate level.

One of the key concepts at Walden is the summer residency. In the 1980s, Walden began offering monthly four-day residencies along with the summer residency. In 1995, the school began offering a Master of Science in Educational Change and Technology plus a doctorate in Psychology that is web-based.

Sylvan Learning Systems purchased a controlling interest in the university in 2001 and added many new degree programs. The company is now known as Laureate Education. Today, Walden University not only provides students with a strong skillset in their field of study, they create graduates who also have a desire to promote global good. Enrollment is over 47,800 students.
